The Thick and the Thin - Jacob (Blog Post 11)
One of my favorite parts of Till We Have Faces is near the finale when Orual descends into the underworld and speaks to Fox. Fox remarks that when he observed the more trans rational parts of religion, the parts he didn’t understand, he dismissed them. Now, looking back, he understands that he was wrong to do so. He should have simply admitted he did not understand and not dismissed them as essential parts that make up the experience of the holy. Both the Fox and the Priest Ungit make up two sides of a single whole, what Lewis would call the Thick, the mysterious and strange part of religion, and Thin, the rational and moral part of religion. This is something Psyche is able to understand. She does not reject the teachings of Fox but believes there is something more than his teachings.
