Blog #2 Anne Porter Hudgins All about Aslan

"Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh," said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"... "Safe?" said Mr Beaver ..." Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."

― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Let's begin with what, Aslan? Aslan is a lion but why? What does Aslan do?

Why did CS Lewis create Aslan as a lion in the likeness of God?

The question can be given a quick answer, but that is not enough. The reason behind CS Lewis making Aslan the Christ-like figure in Narnia "just came to him." Still, this image is a perfect fictional, theological, and developmental representation of Christ.

Lions are scary, powerful, and huge, yet they are warm, fuzzy, and, most importantly, real. They walk this earth.

Aslan is a lion for a multitude of reasons. God's character sometimes gets generalized, but putting God into a little box. People want to put God in a meek box of simple love, but the way God loves is powerful and meets you where you are precisely as Aslan does.

Aslan shows us God is powerful. Aslan impacts the children's hearts; one feels energized, one feels overwhelmed,

Asalan caters to each child differently, just as on earth, we all experience God in different ways and see him in different ways.

Aslan is the strength that applies identity to the children and a relationship that caters to each child in a way they need. Aslan is the point of reference for the children to see they do not identify with things of this world or their own identity but when they seek an identity with Christ (in Narnia Aslan). Aslan relates to people and uses his heart to change the hearts of others. Aslan is not judgemental; instead, he catalyzes change in children's purpose for living.

CS Lewis wants us to leave thinking I want a relationship with Aslan, then therefore, I want a relationship with Jesus (without even realizing it).
