The Four Loves in Till We Have Faces - Jacob (Blog Post 10)
In the Four Loves by C.S Lewis, he looks at the four types of love. There are the three natural loves, familial love, love between friends, and erotic love. All three of these loves are incomplete on their own. If left to their own devices they either die or turn into a horrible caricature of themselves. They need the fourth love, Agape or divine love. Till We Have Faces illustrates this well. Orual loves Psyche deeply, yet it is a selfish and jealous love. She cannot stand the fact that Psyche is not hers anymore. Her love turns into love that is no longer really love. She even tries to use Psyche’s love for her as tool against her. Orual, in her jealous love for Psyche, only loves herself. Psyche, in contrast, says that it is by her union with her divine lover, that she is able to love others more fully.
