Blog # 6 Selective Love

The topic of selective love was brought up in class relating to Oruel’s jealous love for Psyche. Dr. Redick made the connection that sometimes when you enter into a serious romantic relationship, people tend to lose friends due their devotion to their partner. These 'friends' even then complain about being betrayed. This behavior was quite common in high school and middle school. For example: lets say a boy named Timmy had a close knit friend group of guys who do everything together. From late night fast food runs and video games to trespassing and bad jokes, these boys love each other dearly. They even tend to refer to their little posse as “the boys”. Then one day Timmy finds a gal he likes. And as time passes on they get closer and closer. Soon Timmy and this gal become a couple. Timmy starts to spend more time with his little girlfriend and because of this he has less time to hang out with “the boys”. Now “the boys” don’t take well to this occurrence. Soon they start making accusations against Timmy calling him a ‘simp’ and what not. Some of the more religiously inclined boys even recite the first of the 10 Bromandments, Thou shalt have no wenches before thy brethren. Perhaps the 10 Bromandments may be a bit misogynistic, but I believe the main problem to be jealousy. “The boys” become jealous of Timmy’s girlfriend for she now has more of Timmy’s attention then the brethren. This jealousy then leads the boys to make some not so nice comments. Many times some of the Timmys out there are forced to make a tough decision either thy maiden or thy brethren. The root of selective love is jealously. Timmy's friends were jealous that Timmy was spending more time with some one else. Oruel was jealous that Pysche was spending more time away from her.
