Blog #3 Is Leviathan a Crocodile?

Leviathan - Wikipedia

As a follower of Christ, I must say I am very enthralled by the majestic beasts of the book of Job. First we have Leviathan, a grand sea dragon whose mere image reigns terror on the hearts of men. This beast as described in the book of Job:

His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lights; Sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke goes out of his nostrils, As from a boiling pot and burning rushes. His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes out of his mouth (Job 41:18-21).

As you can see, the features of Leviathan are extraordinary, his mere sneezes spawns forth light. I read this with childlike awe every time imagining a wild sea serpent devouring an unfortunate sea vessel that happened to cross its path. I think this just goes to show God's creativity and his grandeur that such a being as Leviathan is still under the whim of God's sovereignty. I myself personally believe in sea serpents such as Leviathan but what I cannot and will not understand is the audacity of fellow believers telling me that God is talking about a Crocodile! Yeah because crocodiles totally breathe fire and sneeze lighting. It would seem that some of us ‘modern intellectuals' move so quickly to dismiss the extraordinary at the feet of the profound deity of “science”. Is it due to our estranged a priori ties to materialism? Or are we just being boorish pricks ripping the joy out of everything we touch?
