#3 - Plants - Aubrey Torre

I discovered a little plant shop called Mother Magnolia in Hilton Village a few months ago after I had taken a test that did not go as well as I had hoped. The energy in that building is electrifying, it exudes positivity and life in a way that I cannot fully explain. I walked in and it looked like I had been transported to the inside of a dried pepto bismol bottle, but in a weird way it was comforting. The owner’s sister was sitting at the desk, and could tell I was having a bad day, so she talked me off the ledge and into buying some plants.

Honestly, that was the beginning of my plant addiction. I now have 15 plants and they are all actually alive which is incredible considering that I did not inherit my mom’s “green thumb.” I’ve really come to love taking care of them and learning about what each plant specifically needs. I’m going to have to re-pot some of them soon, especially since the growing season is here and three of them are not loving that they have to share a pot. They are all relatively easy plants, and I highly recommend getting some for your space. It brings that little bit of outside serenity into your home, and it’s also a great way to know when you should be doing your own self-care. Whenever it’s watering day, I make sure that I take some time to journal, expand on my yoga practice and read a book.

Just in case you’re thinking about getting some plants I’ve made a list of my easier ones!

  1. Satin Pothos

  • I have three of these, and I’m currently propagating three more. They’re so easy, and you’ll know when they need water because their leaves fold in!

  • Not technically an actual Pothos!

  1. Snake Plant

  • Super super easy to care for, and they are excellent at air filtration!

  1. Spider plant

  2. Pothos (in general)

  3. Philodendron (in general)

  • I have quite a few philodendrons, and they’re all different but once you get going you’ll find a rhythm with them!
