Blog #8 Water and Reflection- Anne Porter Hudgins
We had one of my favorite discussions on the last day of class. The theme of water was present in a work by CS Lewis called "Until we have faces." Because the water was brought up in class, we started to talk about the spirituality of water and the way water makes us feel. Water holds this ability to ground us yet let us remain in flow with thought. It doesn't tie us down, yet it brings such peace. You have less control over water, yet you do not seek power. You can surrender to the water. You can leave your legs and float. Water is a life force we need to survive, yet we forget sometimes.
When we swim in the water, we are reminded. We are reminded of the surrender we take by jumping in. Water holds power to give life or take life. It is an earthly representation of our mortality and a reminder in many ways. We see our reflection when we lay in the water, yet it looks distorted. We see ourselves and can feel ourselves. We know the area our body's take up. We hear the water flow and our mind's thoughts when we swim under. Few times can we block out the world yet listen so intently to our thoughts and feelings. These ideas on the water got me thinking about what CS Lewis would say about the meaning water adds to our lives. I researched CS Lewis's relationship with water and found such a beautiful quote that is scripture based. CS Lewis said, "Thirst was made for water; inquiry for truth." Just like we thirst for water, we seek truth in those same places or the same waters. This idea is present over and over in the Bible as well…
