#15 - Orual's Judgment

I am the god of order. My planet is Saturn. I am balanced in everything. The crops come to be and come to rot as a result of my prudence. For every beautiful deer, there is a toad. For each songbird’s song, there is a pig’s grunt. Your appearance is a result of the future beauty of your sister. It is only for the sake of balance that you have been the way you are. I am sorry for your lot, but you must understand that your existence is ultimately necessary for the proper balance of all things, dear Orual. I have watched you from the moment you were born, and you never once understood this to be the case. I saw you as you cursed the gods beneath your breath for your appearance.

I had hope for you at the birth of your sister. I thought perhaps your immediate understanding of her beauty would lead you to view yourself as a fit counterweight on the Earth. Instead, you tried to take her beauty for yourself. You had no beauty of your own and sought to benefit from hers. How selfish of you, dear Orual. You were given the opportunity of an understanding of the world and you only sought a benefit for yourself.

Balance and order is not only a thing of the physical world. It is a thing of the soul. Each person’s soul exists in balance with the souls of others. Beyond this, each person’s soul must be balanced within itself. How do we do this, I am sure you are wondering. This is done through the proper ordering of one’s loves. Even worse than your failure to acknowledge your balance of the physical world, you have made no progress in balancing your own soul. The Fox read myths to you, Orual, and even still were you incapable of learning what is worth loving. Perhaps it was your jealousy clouding your soul. Perhaps it was your hatred of the gods for your lot.

A balanced soul loves each thing the proper amount. It is proper to love the gods above all things. Next, one must love others. Finally, one must love themselves for the proper functioning of society. You have failed to do this properly, dear Orual. You have reversed the order of loves. Your love for yourself above all is what drives you. Your love for Psyche and the good she does you is second in your heart. Love for the gods is nowhere to be seen within your heart. You may be unfortunately ugly, Orual, but you must not hold onto that and consider the gods unloving of you. You even ignore the divine nature within Psyche, desiring her only for the love she is able to give you. Your soul is a mess, my child.

Where is your balance? Why do you not love properly? I pray this message encourages some sort of change within you, my child. You may see the world through only your forward facing eyes, but do not let that stop you from understanding the lives of others. Identify the True, Good, and Beautiful in everything. Determine what is most True and seek it. Determine what is most Good and learn from it. Determine what is most Beautiful and pursue it. Love each thing according to its worth. Be content in your lot, dear Orual. Do not be angry for your own sake, child. Let only your anger be stoked by true injustice. A life of order is very difficult to live. Take what you have learned from the Fox and keep it close to your heart. It is through wisdom that you will develop the abilities to order your soul.
